Summary

Julliard- and London-trained German Pianist Michael Endres is considered one of the world's top Schubert interpreters. He won prizes at the Geza Anda and International Schubert Competition in Switzerland and Germany; his extensive (and multiple-prizewinning) discography includes the complete sonatas of Mozart, Schubert, Weber and Bax, and complete solo works of Ravel and Schumann; and he has appeared throughout the US, Europe and Asia in such exalted venues as Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, Musikverein Vienna, and Suntory Hall. Endres accompanied legendary Baritone Hermann Prey for many years, and has appeared in major festivals in the US and Europe. Since 2009 he has made his home in New Zealand.

Biography

German Pianist Michael Endres enjoys a worldwide following as soloist, recitalist, and chamber music partner. He studied at the Juilliard School in New York under Jacob Lateiner and with Peter Feuchtwanger in London. He was a prize winner at the Concours Geza Anda (Zurich) and took First & Special Prizes at the International Schubert Competition in Germany.

Endres has performed with such esteemed orchestras as the Bournemouth Symphony, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Sudwestdeutsche Philharmonie, Stuttgart Philharmonie and the Cologne Chamber Orchestra; he has appeared at festivals in Europe, America and Asia including Newport (USA), Beethoven Fest Bonn and Salzburg Festival; and in such acclaimed venues as Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, Musikverein Vienna, and Suntory Hall Tokyo, among many others.

His extensive discography of 27 CDs (many of which have received extensive honours) includes the complete sonatas of Mozart, Schubert, Weber and Arnold Bax, as well as the complete piano 2 hands works of Ravel and most of Robert Schumann's works for piano. Widely respected for his interpretations, he was recently awarded his third Diapason d’or (France), and has won the Choc du Musique twice.

Leading US critic Richard Dyer from the Boston Globe called him "one of the most interesting pianists recording today". The New York Times wrote: "the performances with pianist Michael Endres were revelatory". Gramophone Magazine stated: "he is an outstanding Schubert interpreter”. And Fanfare Magazine placed his Schubert playing on a par with Curzon, Richter, Pollini, Brendel, Perahia, and Kissin.

Endres covers a wide repertoire including seldom played composers such as Leopold Godowsky, Gabriel Faure, Charles Ives and Eduard Tubin.

He accompanied legendary Baritone Hermann Prey for many years and continues to partner the Berlin Philharmonic soloists, and the Artemis and Fine Arts String Quartets. Many New Zealanders saw him in collaboration with the ENSO String Quartet during their Chamber Music New Zealand tour of the country in 2012. Locally, he has performed with the Auckland Philharmonia, Christchurch Symphony and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Endres was based in Cologne for 10 years, then moved to Berlin from 2003 to 2009. When not touring, he now makes his home in New Zealand.
